Shipping isn’t just a cost to minimize.
Configured well, it protects margins, incentivizes larger orders, and makes checkout feel fair.
Here are seven practical ways to use conditional shipping rules in WooCommerce using my my free plugin Advanced Shipping Rules for WooCommerce.
Protect margins on heavy orders
Problem: you charge a $6 flat rate. A customer orders a 12 kg item. The carrier charges $22. You lose $16.
Rule: Cart weight > 10 kg → +$12.00 surcharge (final price $18).

Your base flat rate stays for light orders. Heavy orders automatically carry their extra cost.
Incentivize larger order values
Problem: your average order value is stuck and you want customers to spend more per visit.
Rule set:
- Cart total < $50 → +$5.00 handling fee
- Cart total ≥ $100 → no extra fee (cost = $0)
Customers close to the $100 threshold add more to their cart to reach it. Higher average order value, fewer small-order losses.
Manage bulk orders
Problem: a B2B customer orders 40 items at once. Picking and packing 40 items costs significantly more than 5. A flat rate doesn’t cover it.
Rule: Number of products > 20 → +$10.00 (final price $20).

Small retail orders are unaffected. Bulk orders contribute to fulfillment costs.
Create tiered shipping that scales with weight
Problem: Your products range from 100 g to 20 kg. One fee fits no order correctly.
Rule groups (one per bracket):
- Weight ≤ 1 kg → $3.00
- Weight > 1 kg, ≤ 5 kg → $6.00
- Weight > 5 kg, ≤ 10 kg → $11.00
- Weight > 10 kg → $18.00

Customers get a fee that reflects their order.
And, more important, your margins stay consistent across product types.
Offset low-price orders
Problem: you sell product samples or starter packs at low prices. Shipping them at your standard rate makes the economics unworkable.
Rule: Cart total < $20 → +$4.00 small-order handling fee

This doesn’t affect regular customers, it just ensures very small orders cover their own shipping overhead.
Add a seasonal surcharge
Problem: During peak season (Black Friday, Christmas), your warehouse and carrier costs spike. Your flat rate doesn’t adapt.
Temporary rule: Number of products ≥ 5 → +$3.00 peak surcharge
Add it at the start of peak season, remove it after.
Small orders stay at normal rates.
Large holiday orders carry the extra cost.
Target expensive-to-fulfill orders with multi-condition groups
Some orders are costly not because of weight OR quantity, but because of BOTH.
Rule group (AND logic):
- Cart weight > 8 kg
- Number of products > 15
- Cost: $22.00

This fires only for genuinely expensive orders. Lighter bulk orders and heavy single-item orders get their own rates.
How to Get Started
All seven strategies above use the same plugin, the same interface, and zero code.
- Install Advanced Shipping Rules for WooCommerce from WordPress.org
- Go to WooCommerce → Settings → Shipping, open your zone
- Add the Advanced Shipping Rules method
- Create one group per rule
- Save
Pick one strategy, implement it this week, and check the results.
